The immigration station on Ellis Island opened on January 1, 1892. By the time it officially closed in 1954, more than 12 million immigrants had passed through, with a s many as 11,747 individuals being processed in one day. Today, Ellis Island Immigration Museum, featured on this coverlet, pays tribute to the hearty souls whose American experience began here.
